My latest obsession Cage The Elephant were amazing when I saw them at the Big Day Out. A.M.A.Z.I.N.G.I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.L.E.P.U.N.K.R.O.C.K.A.W.E.S.O.M.E.N.E.S.S to explain this more eloquently here is an exert from my review that I wrote for The Mouth, in the heat of the moment, with the fire still burning in my musical soul…
“Enjoyed some skating while Hilltop Hoods played in the background and they always deliver to a home crowd what more can I say. NONE of this compares to who I really came to see… Cage The Elephant!!! After arriving late and seeing the second half of their set in Sydney where lead vocalist Matthew Shultz spent fifty percent of the time swinging his hair, head banging and managing to carry a most excellent tune and the other half held up by the crowd, crowd surfing with his roadie feeding him microphone lead while screaming away I was super hyped to watch them again. But it looked like the word was out as every single Big Day Out photographer was standing around between the barrier and the stage intent on ruining the view in their fluoro yellow vests each with two insanely huge cameras (really not necessary)…
(DOWN IN FRONT!!)
… Another bummer was the aforementioned huge distance between the stage and the crowd which fizzled out my front row dreams of seeing Matthew plunge into the audience once more and reclaim the ‘most awesomely inspiring crowd revolting’ gig of the day. But never fear as when they did appear and launch into an amazing set, Matt broke free and clambered into the crowd like a bird that needed to fly, photographers creaming in their shorts desperate to get the money maker shot…
…Once they had gotten what they wanted and the paparazzi left, I was free to be completely enraptured by a band that I believe are the next Nirvana*… give you a moment to let the weight of that comment sink in…
…watching guitarist Brad Schultz’s angsty face, bent over the entire time giving himself completely to ‘Mr Green’ and his brother the most captivating and musical-soul-awakening front man…
… who seems to need to be completely at one with his audience launching twice more into the crowd, managing to stand up before finishing the set collapsing into a sea of people and running away from security…
…Nothing could top that so I went home… kidding“
If I could have a job as artist liaison for these guys my life would be complete…
